A new "Belgian Icon" emerged in March 2025 when Brussels Airlines unveiled this livery inspired the Atomium Brussels landmark. The structure was the centrepiece of the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. The airline had organised a competition in 2024 with Belgian residents submitting designs that "capture the essence of the country". The work of architect Thomas Faes was chosen after more than 900 very diverse designs were submitted.

OO-SBB A320-251N Brussels Airlines 2024-

Brussels Airlines has been operating special flights to transport Tomorrowland participants since 2012; the airline introduced a fully painted special plane named Amare in 2017 (OO-SNF, see separately). Although it is unclear how the word was formed, the airline says the aircraft name - Amare - stands for unity, love and friendship. With the retirement of OO-SNF in early 2024, a new, updated scheme appeared on OO-SBB in April 2024 (the aircraft had been delivered all white while awaiting for its special paint).

Apart from the unique artwork designed on the occasion, the special livery features augmented reality when scanned through specific social media channels such as Instagram and TikTok. The cabin features a unique sound system and special mood lighting.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder was the most significant artist of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting. He is mostly known for its his landscapes and peasant scenes of its native Brabant. The airline selected Bruegel for its 6th Belgian Icon as 2019 marked the 450th anniversary of his death. Subjects from ten of his paintings were merged by Jos De Gruyter et Harald Thys, two Belgian contemporary artists.

The overhead bins in the cabin featured paintings by Bruegel; books detailing his work were available onboard to read.

Belgian Icons
OO-SND A320-214 Brussels Airlines 2018-24

In 2017 Brussels Airlines launched an online design competition aiming at finding the best design for a fifth aircraft in the "Belgian Icons" series. After a selection by a jury, Marta Mascellani's Smurf creation ranked first in the online poll launched by the airline. The Smurfs are cartoon characters created by late Belgian artist Peyo. 2018 marked the 60th anniversary of their first appearance and the scheme was designed in association with the author's children. Note the two sides were different.

"L'Aéroschtroumpf" (The Aerosmurf) is the title of a Smurfs comic album which tells the story of a little Smurf whose dream is to fly. The little Smurf tried several ideas, but none of them work, until he builds a plane. Since then, the little Smurf is known as Aerosmurf.

OO-SNF A320-214 Brussels Airlines 2017-24

Brussels Airlines has been operating special flights to transport Tomorrowland participants since 2012 and as a result the Belgian music festival naturally became the subject of the 4th "Belgian Icon". The design was prepared by staff of the airline and festival; a team of airbrushers realised this unique artwork on SNF. Although it is unclear how the word was formed, the airline says the aircraft name - Amare - stands for unity, love and friendship.

OO-SNA A320-214 Brussels Airlines 2016-22

The 2016 Red Devils team was invited to participate in the design of the entirely new special livery to be unveiled in time for the 2016 European championship held in France. An all-red design was finally chosen and images of noteworthy players and supporters have been incorporated in the design; note these are different on both sides. The trident is the logo of the team.

In June 2021 the aircraft was resprayed and the logo of the Red Devils was replaced on the fuselage and engine cowlings by the logo of the official fan club of the team.

The success of Rackham (the Tintin Jet) led Brussels Airlines to consider other specials. Foundation Magritte and the airline worked together to produce a unique livery to celebrate the legacy of surrealist painter René Magritte. He is widely recognised for his witty and thought-provoking images. Three paintings were incorporated by the Brussels Airlines designers in the livery: self-portrait La Clairvoyance (1936), La Belle Société (1965-66) as well as Le Retour (1940), with its bird-shaped motive and the nest.

Rackham

We fly you to the home of Tintin
Belgian Icons
OO-SNB A320-214 Brussels Airlines 2015-

"Rackam" was unveiled on March 13, 2015, marking a milestone in the brand efforts of Brussels Airlines. The scheme celebrates the partnership between the airline and the Moulinsart company managing the rights of famous Belgian cartoon character Tintin. The aircraft' shark appearance refers to the Red Rackham's Treasure comics album, where Tintin and Captain Haddock launch an expedition to the Caribbean to locate the treasure of the pirate Red Rackham, who had attacked Unicorn, the ship captained by the ancestor of Captain Haddock.

The cabin of the aircraft is also decorated with Rackham Le Rouge graphics and the album is available to read inside the plane. The move proved to be very successful and led the airline to start a series of liveries now referred to as the Belgian Icons. In 2021 the aircraf was resprayed identically, this time displaying the signature of Hergé.
